What is Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdominal area, and tightening the underlying muscles. The procedure is designed to help create a flatter, smoother, and more toned-looking abdomen.
The skin is then lifted, and the underlying muscles are tightened and stitched into place. Any excess skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is pulled down and stitched into place. The belly button may also be repositioned to a more natural location. If the fat deposits are limited to the area just below the navel, you may require a less intense procedure called a mini-Tummy Tuck.
Procedure
The duration of a tummy tuck procedure can vary depending on the extent of the surgery and the individual patient's needs. Generally, a full tummy tuck can take between two to four hours to complete, while a mini tummy tuck can be completed in about one to two hours.
Recovery
Most patients will need to take at least two to four weeks off work to rest and recover after the procedure. During this time, patients will need to avoid strenuous activities and exercise, and follow their surgeon's post-operative instructions closely to ensure proper healing.
Anesthesia
Tummy tuck surgery is typically performed using general anesthesia, which means the patient is completely asleep and unaware during the procedure. General anesthesia allows the surgeon to perform the surgery safely and comfortably for the patient.

Who Qualifies for Tummy Tuck?
To qualify for a tummy tuck, a person must be in good overall health, without any serious medical conditions that could interfere with the healing process. They should have a stable weight for at least six months and be at or near their ideal body weight, with excess skin and fat in the abdominal area that cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise alone. Smoking is a risk factor, so candidates should be non-smokers or willing to quit smoking for a period of time before and after the procedure. A realistic expectation of the outcome of the surgery is also important, as well as good mental health and emotional preparedness for the surgery and the recovery period. Ultimately, the decision to undergo a tummy tuck should be made in consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon, who can evaluate an individual’s unique needs and goals to determine whether a tummy tuck is a suitable option for them.
